Family Caregiving & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – PTSD

The high stress factor in caregiving: Caregivers coping with high stress can over time develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Tears are a sign of Post Traumatic Stress, where the memories associated to traumatic events becomes an “anxiety wound” that is difficult to heal.

Caregivers must learn to recognize the stress and grief brought on from family caregiving, as the emotional wounding can turn into trauma that erodes health for many years down the road.

Do you suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and  not even know it?  Stress can prevent you from seeing the truth behing health problems.

CAREGIVER REST: A Time to Rest and Heal

Peeky Boo - I see you

Peeky Boo - I see you

Hello,

Zippy and I are hiding in the garden, slug hunting and playing with the faeries and garden gnomes.

I am resting up from a mild stroke in April (too much stress) resulting in losing partial sight in my left eye.

Slowly I am  preparing my garden and household and Barry’s care for when I have eye surgery early July.

Each day I am working on the Heroes site, opening in the autumn 2010; preparing articles, learning new computer programs to run the forum and the on-line polls for Family Caregivers in North America.

Very difficult to work with poor vision, as I see three of everything and have to make a fist with a small hole to look into – sort of like a telescope – to increase my focus.

Zippy is recovering from a nasty dog bite last week. The little fur ball was suffering from PTSD, but had a good talk with her and she is coping well, while comfortably hiding under her blanket with morphine glazed eyes peeking out from under her hiding place.

I had to give her Bach Remedies yesterday as she just couldn’t settle down from the pain. Punctured neck and sprained back muscles. She was happy to lie on my lap while I revamped the Hugs site.  She needs lots of love and cuddles right now.  Her tail is wagging again so she is on the rebound.

She is sleeping under her blanket right now, ears wiggling while she is dreaming – her world purrrrrfect again, maybe of Calli-cat next door.

She misses wrestling with her teddy bear named Humphrey, as I had to hide him way up on the living room chair for a couple of days until she recovers.  Zippy keeps looking up at Humphrey, asking me with her eyes, to take him down for her to play with.  Sorry Zippy, not until your neck and back are better.

This morning she had climbed up, over a blockade of pillows I had put up and pulled Humphrey down off his high perch. – So there!  He is my Humphrey and I can wrestle with him anytime I want!  Poor Humphrey!  He doesn’t stand a chance against the cheeky little 6 lb fur ball.

I am delaying articles for the Hugs site temporarily until after surgery. Then I will have my sight back. Until then Zippy, the little lion hunter, and I will enjoy the sunshine and walks on the beach.
